One night at Onguma Camp Kala

Today, I’m thrilled to share my luxurious experience at Onguma Camp Kala, a stilted lodge situated on the stunning Onguma Reserve in Namibia.

Let me start by saying, this place is absolute paradise! As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by stunning views of savannah grassland, acacia trees, and the beautiful animals that reside within the reserve. The lodge is made up of only 4 luxury stilted suites, which allowed for a peaceful, intimate atmosphere.
Now, let's talk about the private pool and eco hot tub. The moment I saw them, I knew I was in for a treat. The pool was just a few steps from my suite and provided a much-needed escape from the African heat. And the best part? It was all mine! The eco hot tub was a unique addition, providing a way to relax under the stars while still encouraging sustainability and respecting the natural surroundings.

I cannot write about my experience without mentioning our bubbly butler Jack. He went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible, always anticipating our needs and ensuring all of our requests were attended to promptly. He even set up a cozy dinner for us at our suite so that we could enjoy a private meal as the sun went down.
And the food? It was divine! The five-course dinner and breakfast spread were both extensive and delicious. Everything was fresh and prepared to perfection, with several choices to cater for all diets.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the sleek and stylish interior design of the camp, which was created by the talented team at Fox Brown Creative.
Entering my thatched suite, it was clear that no detail had been overlooked in the design process. The custom-made furniture was hand-selected with natural materials and textures, giving the space a luxurious yet rustic feel. The high ceilings, large windows, and private deck allowed for stunning views of the surrounding savannah, which made me feel completely immersed in the beauty of the African wilderness.
The communal areas were just as impressive as the suites. The lounge area was beautifully appointed, with comfortable seating, thoughtful lighting, and a mesmerizing fireplace that immediately made me feel at home. The adjacent bar and dining areas were equally stylish, with a hand-carved wooden dining table serving as the perfect centerpiece for family-style meals and conversation. Throughout the main area, decorative touches like wooden carvings, woven rugs, and tribal-inspired artwork added to the feeling of being in an exclusive, designer oasis.
The reserve itself, spanning over 34,000 hectares, is home to over 30 different animal species. With the help of the knowledgeable guides, guests have the opportunity to spot lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and many other animals. The reserve also offers over 20 different species of birds, making it a great spot for bird enthusiasts.
If you have the chance to explore, the same guide can organize a half-day tour to Etosha National Park. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, and more. It’s a great way to witness and experience the wild and natural environment of Namibia.
As for pricing, Onguma Camp Kala falls into the luxury category with prices starting at approximately $800 (that’s US dollar I’m afraid) per person per night. Although it may be expensive, the impeccable service, breathtaking views, and once-in-a-lifetime experience make it a destination worth working towards visiting.
Packing Essentials
First things first, Namibia can get pretty hot, so I recommend packing plenty of light, breathable clothing essentials like shorts, t-shirts, and dresses. When it comes to footwear, comfortable closed-toe shoes like sneakers, hiking boots, or trail runners are a must for game drives and bush walks. And don't forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong African sun!
When it comes to photography gear and other electronics like smartphones, don't forget to pack extra batteries or chargers, as electricity is available in your Camp Kala suite, but may not be accessible while on the go. Finally, pack an extra memory card and mobile charger for those once-in-a-lifetime shots of Namibian wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
In other words, pack light, practical
Etosha's climate is sub-tropical and semi-arid, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season runs from May to October, with warm, sunny days and cool nights. This is the peak season for game viewing due to the scarcity of water, which forces animals to gather around waterholes. From August to September, the temperatures start to rise, peaking in October, when it can get scorching hot. Meanwhile, the rainy season starts around November and lasts until April, bringing in the lush greenery to the park. While game viewing during the wet season can be more challenging due to the abundance of water, it is a great time for bird watching and viewing the park's stunning landscape.
With that in mind, the best time to visit Etosha for game viewing is from June to October. During this period, temperatures are more comfortable and wildlife sightings are more frequent. On the other hand, if you prefer to explore Etosha's lush vegetation and see the park in full bloom, the best time to visit is from November to April.
Overall, every aspect of my stay exceeded my expectations, from the luxurious features to the serene location and excellent service. If you’re looking for a place to unwind and reconnect with nature while enjoying the finer things in life, this is the place for you.
